Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, are co-founders of the Phoenix New Times and Village Voice Media, opened the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund with a settlement from a wrongful arrest against Maricopa County in 2007. They started this funding organization because they were arrested for writing an article about Sheriff Joe Arpaio and revealing in the article that there was a grand jury pending their notes.

The sheriff arrested both of these reporters in the middle of the night and the Grand Jury tried to subpoena them to reveal their sources. In doing this they had violated the reporters First Amendment Rights.

Micheal and Jim have made a career of defending the rights and freedoms of others. So when Micheal and Jim were forced out of their homes in the middle of the night for a story that they wrote in October 2007 about Sheriff Joe Arpaio and revealing that there was an appending grand jury inditement and then not revealing their sources to the Grand Jury, they sued the county and won.

Using the money they won in the settlement, they started to fund others to support what they are fighting for. They believe everyone has rights and that those right should not be controlled or taken away.

Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund is a funding group that supports advocate group here in Arizona that fight for Civil, Human, and Migrant rights. Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund also funds organizations that fight for Freedom of Speech and Civil Participation in Arizona.

With the settlement, they received from the lawsuit against Maricopa County they decide to fund organizations or advocacy groups who are fighting to protect and defend all of our constitutional rights and freedoms.
